As we head into the festive season, on the back of a long year, with Christmas and New Year around the corner, we are in a much better position than we were this time last year and we can't wait to enjoy some much-needed down time.
With the Mother City starting to show its summer form, it's good to know that we can enjoy our incredible city and surrounds. Our beaches and parks, restaurants and bars, and all our incredible experiences are, for the most part, open for business and it's time to take advantage of all that's on offer!
With our international season curtailed, it's now up to locals to drive the industry through December, January, and beyond and we're happy to do it. With government keeping the country at Level 1, there is no reason we cannot enjoy everything our city, and province, has to offer. Safely.
There is no better place on earth to enjoy the year-end break than Cape Town, with its neighboring regions, ripe for exploration. Whether it's a day trip, weekend away or longer break. Never has there been a better opportunity to explore local attractions and make the most of this incredible destination.
Cape Town
Locals are well versed in what makes the Mother City tick during season, with magic beaches, roadside bars, world class restaurants and two award-winning wine routes to enjoy just some of the things available to locals and visitors. Cape Town has always been a hub of activity this time of year, and while the international visitor numbers will be less than normal, the domestic holidaymakers will ensure the city is buzzing with festive revelries.
Our summer pick: Cabo
Just in time for Cape Town summer, Cabo is the new beach hangout for the festive season. Based at the old Shimmy's Beach Club, Cabo has pulled out all the stops, from the décor to the menu, with the laidback beach vibes in the day to the vibrant beats at night, making it an all-day affair.
Cape Winelands
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are top of the list when Capetonians think of the Cape Winelands, but this season we challenge you to push a little deeper into the winelands - think Robertson, Wellington, and Tulbagh. There is so much to explore and it's well worth spending a couple of nights in the region. Make sure you give yourself a chance to pack in a couple of farms and tastings while you're there.
Our summer pick: Excelsior Wine Estate in the Robertson Wine Valley is a gem. The family-friendly estate is perfect for day trips where you can grab a bite to eat at the deli, while the kids enjoy the play area. In summer, they can try their hand at fishing off the dam's jetty. This family-run estate has been in the valley since 1859.
Cape Overberg
The Cape Overberg is a breath of fresh air, an idyllic break from the city. From MTB tracks and wine in Elgin to coastal meanders and sundowners in Hermanus, and canoeing in Stanford. It's country living and not much of a drive to feel like you're tucked away from the stress of the city.
Our summer pick: Fick's Pinchos and Wine is THE perfect summer vibe. Located at the historic Fick's Pool at Gearing's Point in Hermanus, sample their range of Pinchos with a glass of wine or cocktail, while sitting on a deck overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Cape West Coast
For most locals, Langebaan and Paternoster typify the Cape West Coast, but the coastal towns are just the tip of the 'Weskus'. There is a real vibe on the West Coast, with its rugged beauty and earthy charms, juxtaposed by a burgeoning arts scene, a strong cultural movement. There are also loads of options for lovers of adventure and those looking for something a little more luxurious.
Our summer pick: You don't get more West Coast than The Jetty restaurant at Fryer's Cove in Doringbaai and that's a good thing. The community-run restaurant that forms part of Fryer's Cove, a local winery producing West Coast Sauvignon Blank, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The Jetty serves home-cooked favourites such as snoekkoekies (fish cakes), kerrievis (pickled fish), roosterkoek and fresh line fish. On summer days, you can even get stuck into a traditional fish braai on the jetty.
Garden Route and Klein Karoo
There's nothing stopping you from hitting the road this December and the Garden Route and Klein Karoo is easily one of the best road trips in the country. Iconic coastal towns like Plettenberg Bay and Knysna, and inland gems like Barrydale set you up for a proper breakaway this December.
Our summer pick: Diesel and Crème is as close to iconic a pit stop that you can get. It's probably going to mean a detour, but it's well worth it. Famous for their legendary gourmet milkshakes and eclectic décor, it's a must-stop on your Garden Route travails.
Cape Karoo
You want to get away from the city? Wide open spaces calling your name? There is no better place to get off the grid than the Cape Karoo and it's well worth the longer drive. Make sure you spend at least one night in Matjiesfontein and Prince Albert, where the foodie and arts scene is as impressive as it is unexpected.
Our summer pick: African Relish is a few notches above your average Cape Karoo dorp eatery. The restaurant and cookery school is likely to surprise you with its fare, which includes a selection of woodfired pizzas, pulled leg of lamb with relishes and dips, soup and a variety of interesting salads, such as grilled fig and quinoa. They also offer cooking classes if you're keen and have time.
This festive season, make sure you take advantage of the local experiences, whether it's in Cape Town or beyond, and hit 2022 refreshed and ready to go. Wishing you and your loved ones a magical time off and look forward to working with you all in the new year.
