The Story Behind Bel Ombre Estate

About an hour’s drive from the capital Port-Louis in Mauritius’ Savanne District sits Bel Ombre, a dreamy sanctuary of sea and mountains, exuberant natural bounty, and wildlife thriving amongst thick forests. This wildly beautiful swathe of land, hugging Mauritius’ stunning southern
coastline, has a fascinating story; one rich with the history of sugar cane, adventurism, exploration, and settlement. Bel Ombre was first mentioned in 1769 by the French writer and botanist Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre after a trip to the island in which he wrote about encountering fugitive slaves camping near a marsh, fishing, and chasing deer. By the time the Irish naturalist and the Chief Secretary of Mauritius to the Government Charles Telfair purchased the Bel Ombre estate in 1816, the land was already being heavily cultivated for sugar.

Over the next few decades, Telfair transitioned from slave labor to oxen-powered ploughs, invested in modern technology such as efficient
mills, and experimented with a variety of sugar cane to improve production and quality. Unusually for a man of his time and social status, he also worked hard to enhance working conditions and healthcare for plantation workers. Over the centuries, Bel Ombre rode on the fortunes of its sugar trade. By the middle of the 20th century, it was the largest sugar estate in Mauritius. Since the flattening of sugar prices, the once frenetic mill has fallen silent, its cavernous hall and warehouses now reimagined as modern spaces for meetings, artist gatherings, and entertainment, as well as retail facilities to enhance convenience and provide the essentials for homeowners and their guests. Today’s custodians are committed to creating a peaceful sanctuary, where discovery is now about the exploration and enjoyment of its protected nature reserves and turquoise lagoons.

Even more remarkable is that the imprint of that history is still visible, if not felt, in the landscape - whether in the silent remnant walls of the early settlers, the refurbished plantation house that is Le Château de Bel Ombre, or the old sugar mill that once processed the fortune and livelihood of the estate and of Mauritius itself. More than any other, the custodians of Bel Ombre feel deeply the bond of responsibility to retain and preserve not just the estate’s cultural identity and the island’s deep African roots, but also to connect with its ecological heritage, especially as it sits in the midst of a Man & Biosphere Unesco Reserve. In particular, the estate’s ‘Now for Tomorrow’s sustainability programme is an ambitious blueprint that goes beyond creating a diverse and inclusive community as well as sustainable workplaces to include a dining ethos of farm-to-fork, sourcing artisanal local produce, treating wastewater on-site, encouraging environmentally friendly transport, and striving to become
carbon-neutral by recycling green waste and eliminating single-use plastic packaging.

incentives including the right to purchase and fully own free-built land, the ability to work in Mauritius, and attain tax resident status for owners living on the island for more than half a year.

In addition to automatically receiving an individual or a multiple residency permit when purchasing a villa at Heritage Villas Valriche, under the IRS programme, owners are assisted by a dedicated team of professional architects and project managers to build their new home through a “Vente en l’État Futur d’Achèvement”, or VEFA, contract. This unique contract allows you to buy a property off-plan and to own the land immediately upon sale. Ownership of the building passes only upon completion of a villa’s construction, whilst completion is guaranteed by a bank. Of course, owners who prefer a ready-made option may choose from a selection of pre-built, unfurnished villas, or already-furnished properties.

Heritage Villas Valriche’s sustainability commitment in Bel Ombre is anchored in the belief that meaningful social contributions begin at home, with proceeds from villa sales funding a raft of programmes. Since 2009, the estate has produced its own water needs without any reliance on the
municipal ressources. Waste water and rain water are recycled, and waste segregated, while an ambitious collaboration with Heritage Golf
Club to create a retention basin has substantially mitigated flooding in the area.

The estate also supports pre-primary and primary students in Bel Ombre and neighbouring districts with meals at school; provides food support to vulnerable communities; creates local facilities and training to support the development of local, small businesses; and nurtures agri-entrepreneurs in the production of sustainable chemical-free fruits and vegetables.

The UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve

At Heritage Villas Valriche, nature in its unbridled splendour beckons at every turn. In fact, two-thirds of the estate lies within the 1,300-hectare Bel Ombre Nature Reserve - a landscape of protected tropical gardens, waterfalls, volcanic peaks and tropical forests which UNESCO has designated as a ‘Man & Biosphere Reserve’. Thanks to a decades-long conservation effort, the reserve is being returned to a wild, natural haven teeming with
endemic flora, and rare fauna such as Java deers, wild boar and Pink Pigeons. The incredible biodiversity of the estate provides a plethora of immersive and inspiring experiences - all within easy reach of your villa - including a lodge from which guided tours set out on exploratory adventures, birdwatching, forest picnics, deer stalking, treasure hunts and ‘Survivor’-styled treks across the estate, whilst in the late afternoon, lie back and marvel at the chauve-souris (fruit bats) -Mauritius’ only remaining native mammal since the demise of the dodo - swoop over the trees.
