Decor trends to look out for in 2022

Category Property Trends

The new year is a month old already and we're all fully into the swing of things and much like property trends, the world décor is constantly changing, with plenty of new things to look out for and take advantage of.

We've looked at some of the biggest décor trends to have taken shape since last year and continued to evolve in 2022.

Colour of the Year

What's a new year without a splash of colour? Both Pantone and Dulux have both leaned into a fresh palate, putting plenty of thought into bright, breezy tones that speak to a world looking for a fresh, clean - and new - beginnings.

What they Say:

Pantone - Very Peri: a new pantone colour whose courageous presence encourages personal inventiveness and creativity.

Dulux - Bright Skies: the colour for 2022 is set to "bring a breath of fresh air to any home". Bright Skies is a light, airy and optimistic blue that's good for the soul.

What we say:

After the past two years, we really need a bright, fresh palette to clean things up and both 'Very Peri' and 'Bright Skies' do exactly that. Use it to brighten up your living space - or home/work space - or as a feature wall in a bedroom or playroom.

Make the most of your spaces

Since 2020, we have been spending a lot more time in our homes, and that's not going to change anytime soon, with many homeowners ensuring their properties are set up for work and play. Homes now provide multiple spaces, from a home office to an outdoor garden space for moments of solitude.

But while 2020 and the early parts of 2021 saw a lot of multi-functional spaces, homeowners are now ensuring they have dedicated spaces for specific functions. Home offices are no longer a laptop in the dining room, but rather actual offices, with the necessary furnishings and space to ensure they are operational, while many homes are also starting to cater to health and wellness, with small gyms, meditation rooms and additional storage space.

The heart of the home is still the kitchen... and then some

The kitchen has always been considered the heart of the home, where families gather to break bread, and the pandemic only heightened this, with families and couples using the area to inspire.

This has led to more thought - and budget - being put into revamping kitchen spaces, with attention being given to both aesthetics and functionality.

Take it outside

Understandably, people are spending more time out in the garden. Let's be honest. South Africans find it very difficult to be indoors for too long at the best of times, but the last couple of years has put the spotlight firmly on the outside area, which has ultimately become a place of refuge. Outdoor furniture has become important. Beautiful, big, comfortable oversized chairs and couches, placed in the garden under trees or on patios have become very important in terms of design and space.

Wellness at home

One of the bigger trends to emerge during lockdown is homeowners moving their workout spaces to their living spaces. While the lockdown didn't give people a choice, many have stuck with the home workout routines, putting serious consideration into their workout spaces to ensure wellness is always in reach. And you don't necessarily need a massive budget to make it happen, take a look at how you can personalise your workout space here according to your space and budget.

Make the smart choice

New tech is also starting to make inroads into private homes, with new products coming online all the time. Outdoor friendly smart lights, security cameras and video doorbells and smart locks provide security to homeowners, while the progress being made in robotics allows for automated vacuums, milk-timers and more for ultimate convenience. As tech continues to improve, the uptake of private homeowners will continue to match the progress.
