It's been a strange old year, with so much to deal with, and while the festive season is destined to be a slightly more muted affair in 2020, we can still enjoy all the great things on offer in Cape Town, safely.
Covid-19 has left a massive mark on all of us and continues to do so, but with the year starting to wind down, we are all looking for a way to take a deep breath, re-centre ourselves and prepare for, what we hope will be a more 'normal' 2021.
Thankfully, Cape Town has plenty of ways for you to do exactly that.
The Great Outdoors
One thing lockdown has shown all of us this year is just how much we need wide open spaces. Not just because of government regulations, but for our sense of well-being, both physical and mental. Cape Town, of course, has plenty of wide-open spaces to enjoy, from the Table Mountain National Park - hikes on Lion's Head, Skeleton Gorge are more popular than ever - to the beautiful Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in Stellenbosch, there is so much to choose from. And it's not just the land you can explore, but the ocean as well, with kayaking launching from Mouille Point and snorkeling with seals in Hout Bay the most epic way to explore the deep, blue waters of Cape Town and its surrounds.
Wine and dine
The Cape Winelands is a mere 40 minutes away, but the Constantia Wine Route is even closer, meaning, once again, you are spoilt for choice! In reality, the hardest decision you will need to make is deciding on where to go first. The Constantia Wine Route is world class with older farms like Groot - and Klein - Constantia combining with 'younger' estates like Constantia Glen and Eagle's Nest to create an incredible variety of experiences, including cellar tours, pairings and signature tastings. It could also be argued, that outside of the city bowl, Constantia may boast some of the most impressive eateries and wine experiences in Cape Town. We ask only that you abide by the Covid regulations, with few industries having been hit as hard as the wine and hospitality industries.
Beaches
As it stands, the beaches in Cape Town are still open and they are as immaculate as ever. There is, however, a curfew involved with beachgoers only allowed between 9am and 6pm. From Clifton 1-4 to Hout Bay, the Atlantic Seaboard is famous for its glorious white, sandy beaches and that's before you even start exploring the rest of the city's beaches! Muizenberg, Long Beach, the list is as endless as our iconic coastal stretch. Please, again, abide by the regulations. We are all in this together.
Pack a picnic
If you're not keen on sit-down meals at the moment, you will be happy to note that Cape Town is the ideal city for loading up a picnic basket and finding a choice spot to enjoy the fare. From Groot Constantia to Cape Point Vineyards, you and the family can enjoy a picnic in style, with rolling green lawns and epic views to soak in. You can also support local, visiting the variety of delis and bakeries around the city, stocking up your own basket and then taking advantage of all those wide-open spaces we mentioned earlier to enjoy the feast.
Drive in Experience
Fancy a movie? Viewed from anywhere except a laptop screen. Cape Town also has wonderful cinema spaces that allow for intimacy with social distancing, an ideal outing to treat yourself, a loved one or even those fussy relatives who've arrived for the festive season. The Galileo Open Air Cinema experiences provide you with fresh air and a movie, while the new V&A Waterfront Drive In experience is a retro - and safe - way to enjoy a night out with friends or family. Something different to transport you away from what has been a tough year for all of us!
The second wave has hit Cape Town - along with the rest of the country - so we want you all to stay safe this festive season. You can still enjoy this beautiful city of ours, but need to stick to all regulations and protocols, not just to ensure your own safety, but that of everybody else as well.
